How do you manage to deal with other people’s opinion so well? Maybe I’m just too young and naive but at times I find it hard to understand other people’s views and perspectives on matters. Is it something that just comes easier with time and experience?

Well, in my experience… honestly, yes, it’s gotten easier for me as I’ve gotten older. Time and experience are important for perspective.

I think as you grow, you are naturally going to encounter more people and more experiences that are different than yours, and learn that your life experiences are limited. Forging relationships with people who are different than you, getting to know them as a person outside of just that opinion you disagree with (and obviously I am not taking about extreme things like racism or the like) helps you empathize and look beyond just that opinion. At least, it did for me.

It’s also a process, and it’s important to be gentle with yourself on the process. I hope I continue to grow throughout my life–I doubt I’ll hold exactly the same opinions at 36 as I do now at 26. I definitely don’t hold the same opinions I did when I was 16. It’s always going to be hard, though, because I think it’s part of human nature to want simple answers and to leap to conclusions (and if you’re me stick your foot in your mouth in doing so, #oops). But the older I get (and I’m still relatively young compared to many!) the more I find that things are seldom as simple as I wish they were.

So when it comes to writing characters, is it okay to not give certain characters big backstories if you don’t plan on them serving large roles in the story or are mostly background characters? I’ve been trying to write a story and I’m not sure if that counts as lazy writing.

It’s totally fine! It depends on the writer and the story. I know some writers supposedly fill out pages and pages of background information for characters that will never be relevant to the story, and while I generally have a rough idea of what their backstory is, I definitely don’t do that. It comes down to their role in the story, and what you are comfortable with. If they are a major character, I think backstories are important to understanding them, but they aren’t everything.

I’ve been thinking about this since I did a rewatch of S1 but what do you think about the way the anime of SNK seemed to emphasize Rivetra a lot more than the manga, given the added scenes that show Levi taking her death the hardest? I find it interesting how the anime did that while the guidebook and Junior High spin-off manga teases Petruo (which I prefer) more with their “old married couple” dynamic.

That’s an interesting question. I have no idea. I also prefer Petruo and don’t ship Rivetra (it’s cute though, so awesome if you do!) But I really wonder. The anime also played up LeviHan in the first season as well if I remember correctly? Maybe they were just going to maximum Levi appeal. 😛

Hello! I was just wondering what do you think about Aruani? I know there’s been a lot of buzz about them due to recent chapters but tbh I’m not sure how they became one of the more prominent ships 🤔 I’m kind of a dud when it comes to pairings I don’t ship so I’m pretty oblivious about the appeal here lol ^^;

It’s my OTP! Haha it’s my favorite SnK pairing. I’m not expecting canon romance really, but Isayama definitely teased it in recent chapters, and I do expect Annie to get out of the crystal and her most important relationship in terms of interaction thereafter likely to be with Armin based on the set up, but you never know. I wrote this awhile ago!
