Yep! I’ve read all of them. I’m actually more of a fan of the movies than the books for LOTR at least, which is definitely unusual, but I’m just… not a fan of Tolkien’s prose. I like the story a lot, though, and Sam’s speech from The Two Towers is still one of my favorite scenes in any media.
The Hobbit I like the book’s story; the movies I only saw the first one and was bored out of my mind so didn’t watch the next two. 😛

I also think the problematic elements in Disney Princess films are focused on disproportionally compared to other films from similar eras, which are just as problematic if not more so, thanks to society being misogynistic inherently and biased towards putting down things that are “girly.” There’s this attitude of “we must protect the media our women consume!” that stretches back centuries (like, men used to fret that novels were ruining female morality by giving us ideas like that we are people). So I get grumpy when princess films are scrutinized a disproportionate amount when compared to like, other kids’ films or adult films from the same era that are technically just as problematic.

Yeah, I agree. To clarify, I am happy for shippers who like that ship and I hope they enjoy their content! I have friends who ship it. I just don’t like it thanks to constant harassment. Sigh.
He was a character I cared deeply for. Utena and Anthy were my favorites, and I also liked Nanami, but Touga is probably right up there as well. My favorite analysis of his character is this meta by @empty-movement. Everything I would say about him is covered in that meta!
I like him because he is a very broken person encased in hypocrisy and good intentions, a scared child with an intense sense of self-loathing, a deep love for others and yet no compassion for himself–or so it seems. He is someone who really wants to save people, but he hates himself, and I found that relatable. Shirou tries to save everyone constantly because he’s trying to prove that he has value (because he believes he doesn’t) to prove he can stay alive, and if he has to sacrifice himself, well then, so be it. But, in the end, it’s all selfishness. It’s about him, not about others no matter how it seems, and that’s where the Archer persona develops from: his intense, burning desire to prove his self worth. The reveal that Archer is Shirou felt powerful to me because it was exposing his darkest shadows, the parts of himself he refused to acknowledge but that the longer he refused to acknowledge them, the stronger they grew.
He reminds me of Historia from SnK, Kaneki from TG, etc. In general, I happen to really love that kind of character.
I don’t know Naruto at all, but yes, in my experience, shipping is pretty prone to toxicity for all fandoms. But it’s also prone to some really wonderful things as well.

Is this about the SnK ship that I have like everything blacklisted for and yet still get like multiple asks per week (and have ever since July) yelling at me for genuinely thinking it has no chance of canonicity? Like that’s how you take a ship I don’t ship but think is cute and turn it into a flaming NOTP. Because it is now. A NOTP.
Lol. In case you can’t tell, I have salty feelings on it currently as well. My opinions on shipping are that for me, it’s part of the fun in fandom, and if people want to speculate about canon go right ahead (I do), but the moment you put anything about a story–a ship, a theme, anything–about a real person and harass them and condemn them for not having the same taste as you and for expressing their opinion, you need to take a step back.
I started out on tumblr in the Reylo fandom, so let me tell you, while I was mostly a lurker, I have stories. Lol. The harassment is kind if legendary for being really, really bad. Like I said, I was mostly a lurker, and I got honest to goodness rape threats. (There’s a shipping community in the TG fandom that has sent me actual death threats, which were almost funny if they weren’t really creepy and unnerving.)
Suffice to say: most fandoms are flaming dumpster fires when it comes to ships. There is nothing new under the sun. It’s frustrating when you really like shipping though, and enjoy it, but everyone is screaming at each other and needs to take a chill pill.
I take an attitude of “ship and let ship.” I have NOTPs. I have NOTPs the fandoms have ruined for me (like the SnK one we’re both talking about), I have NOTPs I don’t like for more petty reasons (Bertolt and Annie) but am happy for people who do like them, and NOTPs that squick me out to put it mildly (Eren and Levi, Max and Ash or Blanca and Yut-Lung from Banana Fish). But why people ship what they ship is 100% not my business, and I’m not interested in policing anyone’s enjoyment of their ships.
I blacklist tags for things I don’t want to see so that I don’t have to see that content if it really squicks me out. I don’t go into tags and hate-read anything. Basically, I try to mind my own business and focus on the ships I like. Just because someone says their ship is THE BEST EVER doesn’t mean it is. You can disagree and your opinion is just as valid. Just roll your eyes and continue on to finding something you actually like.
I’ve blacklisted everything related to that SnK ship and the two other ships (from the TG fandom, one of which I ship lol!) that have spawned harassment. I recommend doing the same, but of course, blacklisting isn’t going to block everything. If I need to express my salt, I do so (privately so as not to antagonize).
People who are harassing others are the worst, so you’re already in a better place by not doing that. Encouraging people to be kind to each other and practicing that as much as possible (because no one is perfect) is a good step.
