As far as your first question goes we unluckily don’t have Alma’s POV, so we can’t know for sure! It is possible that Rod and Alma’s relationship had its root in a mutual attraction.
As you said Rod felt understood by Alma, so it is possible she showed true sympathy towards him. That said, Rodd and Alma remain two people who are ready to put their own interests over the people they care about.
