Seen the newest Tumblr Crackdown? Because I’m expecting Tumblr to rock-bottom eventually, do you have another social media I could follow? (Ao3 is great for fanfics, but it’s not really a social media/fandom discussion platform.)

*sobs* I’m annoyed. Tumblr, I like what you do, I like your site, I like my blog and I don’t want to lose all my followers lol. I get the crackdown and honestly I personally don’t mind it–it’ll be nice to scroll my dashboard at work without worrying a mutual has reblogged someone eating dick because I don’t enjoy seeing that content at all–but I know it’ll bother a lot of people and push artists and creators to other platforms, which is just really stupid. And the whole female nipples as nudity–CAN WE NOT. Sigh.

Anyways, yes, I have a twitter! It’s @kateevelyn3. I might look into setting up a, like, actual blog too that isn’t hosted on tumblr and see if I can transfer my content there just in case. Uggggghhhhhhh.

BNHA thoughts, about Hawks. This idea came from reading a fanfic that pointed this out, and it got me thinking, made me start analyzing. Hawks and Shigaraki are foils in a sense. I mean, the panel of child!Shigaraki and the panel of child!Hawks are similar – they’re even sitting in the same “lost child” pose. Both are sitting in awful-looking conditions, and are “rescued” (yeah, NO) by an authority figure on either the Hero or Villain side, again, another set of panels that look similar. Part 2>

Hawks-Shiga Foils, Part 2. Shigaraki is raised as a successor to AFO,
one who will become an “Ultimate Villain” like his “Sensei” had been.
Shigaraki is wanted for his absolutely devastating Quirk, his
psychological/symbolic value as Nana’s grandson is just a nasty
cherry-on-top. There’s not much past to go on with Hawks (yet). He was
been taken in by the Hero Commission and raised to be a “Hero” first and
a person second. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that his real name
isn’t known. Part 3>

Hawks-Shiga foils Part 3. The way Hawks was raised to be a Hero by his
“handlers” feels like grooming. It’s skin-crawly. The whole “faceless
dudes in suits” trope is one way to immediately make an organization
seem far less trustworthy to the audience, and who are the Hero
Commission (not actual Pro Heroes) so far? Faceless Business Suits. In
short, Shigaraki and Hawks have been groomed by the opposite sides – but
it says much more when it’s a supposedly “heroic” organization doing
it. Part 4>

Hawks-Shiga foil Part 4, kind of. A Disclaimer I Probably should have
put at the start: This talk of foiling applies to canon material, I
brought up the fanfic because it explores this bit of foiling and gave
me the spark to do some thinking of my own. Having said that, If you
ever want to discuss fanfics in a meta way, I’d be up for it.) The
fanfic, series actually, is “Keep Your Vigil” by pariahpirate on Ao3.
Considering it inspired a meta/discussion out of me, I /really/
recommend this one.

Thanks for the recommendation! And I do agree that it does apply to canon material as well. Hawks and Shigaraki do have a lot in common in terms of being raised for the opposite side and their less than fortunate backgrounds being taken advantage of. Like, we don’t need much to tell us that we’re getting cringey vibes from the brief flashback we had of Hawks, that people were eager to have him stoke his quirk while he clearly has very little control over his life (even now, what with being forced to infiltrate the League of Villains and all). I’m curious to see how this gets developed further, as I am still dreading Hawks’s fall to villainy.

BNHA thoughts, Himiko and Ochako foiling. If Ochako gets aggressive in her upcoming fight, and Horikoshi actually goes anywhere with her jealous streak, it would make her less “heroic” and give her more complexity (which I think she needs). Meanwhile, Himiko has surprising depth, considering that she was introduced as kind of a stereotypical Yandere. We’ve seen her show bravery, empathy, she’s smarter than her bubbly persona suggests. These two could do with growing toward each other somewhat.

Yeah. If Ochaco’s development has to do with Deku, I’d be okay with it in terms of it actually affecting the plot besides its own romantic subplot, which is all it’s done so far.

BNHA stuff. Since Bakugou went for “win by saving” in his fight, I wonder if that means Izuku will need to “save by winning” in his fight? I’m thinking the story will pull a poetic role switch here – Bakugou is pulling from Izuku’s playbook. So, does Izuku needing to pull from Bakugou’s book in order to succeed in his match sound likely to you?

That would be really cool!! I would love to see it, because development for Deku is, as I mentioned in my last answer, sorely needed. I also really want to see development in terms of the vestiges–what is going on there? But I think he needs to learn to win against AFO by saving (Shigaraki) but also to do it without destroying himself and his poor arms and legs. I hope the vestiges and the fight are important to this development!

BNHA thoughts, in a similar vein to the ask about Yanderes, and your reply about how the narrative doesn’t treat Himiko as a joke, even though she’s a “fun” character who often lightens the mood when she shows up. I think the same applies to Twice. Even though he does so much goofing off – which /might/ be a coping mechanism – when he suffers it’s treated seriously. I mean, his backstory was really painful to read – and Twice is never sure if he’s the “original” or not, OUCH.

YES. Twice’s backstory is absolutely heartbreaking, and it’s presented with such empathy. I hope we see a bit more development for him.

BNHA 205 thoughts. On top of every other “Dabi is Touya” hint, this chapter also plays the “how many times can Shouto physically resemble Dabi” game. The two most striking ones are the full-page of Shouto with messy hair and the “back off” glare, which is such an edgy Dabi face. I think Shouto’s hellfire flame was scorching his face a little bit in some panels. I’m expecting Shouto to have some new burn scars next time we see him. Either way I’m hyped for more Todoroki fam Dysfunction Junction.

It DOESSSS The hair in that panel, if black… the resemblance would be uncanny. And yes! Please more Todoroki dysfunction. I’m encouraged Horikoshi doesn’t appear to be dropping it.

Some thoughts on Yanderes. Most Yanderes are, in a certain way, very loving. They love deeply. Intensely. Overwhelmingly. It’s wonderful, except – almost by definition, a Yandere doesn’t understand how to love healthily. To see them try to learn is painful (because they’re gonna do Bad Things at first). BUT. It’s also heartwarming to see the Yandere who succeeds in their own precious, broken way. Maybe that’s what makes Yanderes so appealing.

Yeah. TBH, Palm Siberia is perhaps the best example of a yandere imo, in that she basically breaks down that trope and is a beautiful character with a great arc of her own.

I strongly, strongly, strongly dislike the trope as it is often used, which is to say, it’s kind of like LOL look at the crazy lady. Because that absolutely reeks of  misogyny. For example, I still am very unhappy with how TG treated Mutsuki, who was born female (I actually haven’t seen anyone, no matter their feelings on the character or the story, thinking Mutsuki’s yandere arc was well done). Palm can at first seem like that kind of stereotype, but she is so much more than that. And I so far don’t really have complaints about how Himiko is written either: BNHA does not seem to be mocking Himiko, even if she is kind of a fun character, as she also gets some really lovely moments, like with Twice. I’d love to see her learn! We will see.

My opinion about the “Is Mitsuki Abusive” thing. She’s not framed as such. BUT. Just like TG, this particular slapstick trope is pretty damn disingenuous to use in a series that deals with abuse.

Yeah, I agree. In BNHA’s defense, it is a lighthearted series, but the fact that Endeavor and Bakugou are clearly foils really muddies the slapstick and I do understand why people are triggered by it, though it’s still pretty clear that she isn’t intended to be portrayed as abusive.

BNHA thoughts. Based on other posts, I’m not the only one here – I’m thinking Shouto is going to produce blue hellflame in the next chapter (defeating Tetsu). Shouto will likely scar himself in the process, likely not that badly, but enough. Maybe enough that he’d look scarily familiar in a black wig. I just wanna see Shouto putting two and two together here – his missing bro, the blue flame Quirk, the burn scars. (Even though I still like the idea of Rei being the one to figure it out somehow.)

Same haha! I want someone to have a realization that oh, that’s almost what Dabi looked like. Even if they think Touya is dead (really the only reasonable explanation at this point) someone please have that realization.
