Okay but, the thing about this that makes it so sad is that this is never Erwin, it’s never his face. It’s the Scouting Legion. It’s the wings of freedom both times and never the person. It’s that Erwin Smith is secondary to this bigger than him dream, this whole idea that he’s going to give his life for. Even in the last panel, you can see the wings of freedom clearly, covering his face because it was the thing that consumed him.
