I finished Circus act today and I really liked it, as much as other parts of the series,(exept first, haven’t read it) especially how Hisoka’s bitterness was portrayed, Illumi/Killua dynamic was close second though. I also loved how Gon confesses that he knows what Hisoka has done in Midnight clear. I guess it is still possible that they will interact in manga. Circus act really fixed my mood. Thank you and good luck!
Thank you, I’m glad you liked it! 😀
Idk if someone already asked you that before, but what is your favorite kind of manga (genre and all) ? Do you prefer realistic stories or supernatural ones, or do you prefer depressing ones over more hopeful stories, or just a mix of it all?
It really depends!!! Haha. So I’m gonna talk about stories in general since I can’t really differentiate mangas from them, if that’s okay? Also as a disclaimer: this is my opinion, my own personal taste, what I like.
I like tragedies, but I prefer hopeful stories. Hence why I never write tragic fanfictions. XD Above all else though? I prefer a well-written story. (Which is why for like, Shakespeare, I infinitely prefer his tragedies to his comedies with the exception of Twelfth Night–because they’re largely just better stories with more to say.) That being said, there are plenty of stories I consider objectively well written and good, but I don’t personally like them or have mixed feelings for other reasons.
I like mangas with any kinds of themes in general, so long as they pull those themes off well. Themes and characters are what are probably going to attract me to a manga, more so than like worldbuilding or a cool plot. Those are like, great when I get them, but the themes and characters are what I’m invested in. I need to be able to connect with one or the other to truly like a story.
I like stories that move me emotionally, however they move me. I like stories that are honest about how people behave. I like stories that critique humanity, but I despise nihilism and it’s nearly impossible to pull a nihilistic story off in a way that will affect me emotionally (Nier Automata is like, the one exception). Lots of people feel differently, which is great! But that’s my taste. Depressing/angsty stories with optimistic endings that aren’t forced/swept under a rug? I love that kind of thing.
Themes I am drawn to involve children struggling with their parents, the evil humanity is capable of, abuse and trauma recovery, the struggle to connect with other people, etc. I like stories that are psychological, have Jungian themes, etc. I like redemption and dysfunctional families.
I’d give three stories ever a 10/10 and those are: Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Hunter x Hunter, and Urasawa’s Monster. All of these are very psychological, have hopeful endings, critique humanity, deal with parent/children struggles, etc. They all have characters who are gripping and powerful themes that encourage living over dying.
So yeah. That’s my personal taste in stories, though it’s difficult to word properly and obviously there are exceptions and I enjoy plenty of stories that aren’t thematic or aren’t deep in characters (it usually has one or the other though). I like stories I consider poorly written sometimes, too 😛 I guess what I’m mostly looking for is: does it move me emotionally? (Enjoyment counts.) Sorry this is kinda nonsensical!
I really wish there was a fanfic/doujinshi about them doing various stuff together (hanging out in the city of Love, fighting, traveling in fishy places, solving their issues together, talking about personal things, Gon volunteering to do good deeds and Hisoka kinda helping, slowly redeeming, as cliche as it may sound, etc) I hope will get something similar in cannon.
WAIT may I… recommend my own fanfic?? It’s called “Circus Act” (it’s kinda part two in a four part series that is Hisoillu and Kurokura in a modern AU) but Hisoka basically mentors Gon (and tells off Ging a few times) but Gon also kind of… helps him grow too. Parts two and four of the series have the most Hisoka and Gon mentor focus, but part 3 and 1 have some as well.
I’m also writing a college AU for them… maybe I will include more of Hisoka mentoring Gon. I too like Hisoka and Gon as a mentor-mentee relationship (anything other than that is a giant hell to the NO from me, but I like them as mentors).
In canon, maybe two people actually have the potential to care about Hisoka, and those are Illumi (whose own understanding of love is massively warped) and possibly Gon after his time-out post Ant arc, but Gon is also, you know. Horrified by Hisoka in almost all their interactions thus far. As he should be. The thing is though that Hisoka and Gon are the same kind of character (Netero and Ging are very much like them as well) in that they are looking for the next thrill at the expense of everything else–which can translate into everyone else–and which Hisoka takes to the utmost extreme.

I am wondering if, when they meet again (as providing Togashi’s health allows and the story continues, I think they will) Gon might have developed a capacity to empathize (which he did not practice much before) and might see someone who has fallen just like he had fallen but without the people to pull him out of the pit he dug for himself. But whether or not Hisoka would be receptive to Gon and/or Illumi actually caring about him at some point, I don’t know. He’d probably have to fall further for that to happen. Which since I’m pretty sure he won’t get to kill Chrollo or all the Spiders (just some of them) he just might.
At the same time, Hisoka cared more about Gon being injured than Ging did, so. Good job Hisoka.
read/seen One Piece?
I saw that it was over 800 chapters and over 800 episodes and I was like:

No matter how good it is (and I’m sure it’s enjoyable!) I just–800+ chapters is a commitment I just don’t have time to make. It took me forever to agree to read HxH because 380 chapters was intimidating. Annnnd whether this is fair or not (it’s probably not fair, but it is something that I do think) at that point I start to doubt an author really has an endgame in mind (and endings matter just as much if not more than the journey for me with only a few exceptions like say, HxH, and that’s because HxH is really like a series of separate stories with an overarching theme as well and the ending to each arc has been satisfying) and usually the longer fiction is the more I’m like “does it really need to be that long” and the answer is, almost always, no. (Even novels like Les Mis and War and Peace could be shorter #noonecaresaboutthesewersvictor)
what about the ua teachers how would they react to the hunter x hunter verse and how the hunter system works and the zoldyck family and their connection to hunter association and how the town they live in now what they do without any consequences against them. they react to heavens arena and how it works and the things that being a hunter would allow a person to do like It also grants the ability to kill without facing major legal consequences. which is why hisoka wanted it. and how ging was
able to get violent criminals released due to being a hunter.
So funnily enough I don’t have a problem at all with Ging giving Death Row victims a second chance as opposed to keeping them on death row; it’s literally the one thing I’m like ‘good job Ging’ to. But I do think that the BNHA crowd would be horrified at it. (But perhaps they could learn a bit about second chances and redemption from the HxH crew.)
I’m not great with headcanons (they are like writing a story, it requires a lot of mental energy and I struggle with that) so I won’t be able to come up with an in depth answer, I’m sorry!
I think the BNHA students would be shocked at the lack of oversight in the HxH system, as would the LOV, so perhaps they can finally bond over “at least we’re not like THOSE losers.” XD The Zoldycks I think would absolutely horrify the UA kids though, and I am ALL FOR them storming Kukuroo Mountain and freeing them all. I am also all for an Illumi-Dabi fight in which they scream at each other and realize they are both trying to cope with the same issue but in opposite ways.

(With a bit older Gon), Hisoka giving dating tips. Or simply Hisoka being less of a creep and Gon’s mentor figure. I’d read a whole new manga about their adventures together (with a bit less psychotic Hisoka, who doesn’t plan to murder Gon when he reaches his maximum potential and when Gon makes him to do some good deeds, would be more cliche but heartwarming). It seems like they won’t have any more interactions in cannon and they don’t have any special bond, kinda upsetting.
Well, Hisoka is basically a stealth mentor! I’m also… Hisoka really is unable to not mix up fighting/killing from any kind of love/affection. See: Illumi. It’s really quite sad because his emotional growth is basically stunted because of his inability to understand attachments and the concept of relationships not being entirely about what they can bring you. Which of course limits how he can mentor Gon. 😦
I’ll state that I actually strongly disagree about canon! I’d be shocked if they didn’t interact again. You can never be sure but they almost certainly will. Hisoka is Gon’s shadow; the goal of having a shadow character is to integrate with them. Just never seeing them again does not quite work for that.
