You have synesthesia?

I do! I’ve actually participated in a couple studies on it, one with @mercyandmagic because she has it too. We used to debate over the colors of different letters growing up!

I actually didn’t know it wasn’t normal until I read Invitation to a Beheading by Nabokov at 18 and someone mentioned synesthesia as it appears in his writing, I looked it up, and was like wait… but doesn’t everyone see letters and numbers as colors? And my college roommate looked at me and was like, wtf no, lol.

I experience grapheme-color synesthesia, or seeing letters and numbers as specific colors (like I know when looking at this text it’s black, but I also see them as colors in my mind?) and also have number-form spatial synesthesia, and numbers (0-10) are also correlated to personalities in my mind. Like I know they aren’t personalities but I associate 2 with a girlish, shy personality, 9 is a blustering businessman with no sense of humor, etc.

I’ve also heard my intense… hatred of certain words Like That Character From Berserk’s Name is also possibly related because it does literally nauseate me but idk if that’s actually synesthesia. The others are, though.

Have you read “Lolita”? If yes, what do you think about it?

I haven’t, and I don’t intend to. I know it isn’t endorsing its subject matter and I’m not advocating censorship, but it’s a subject matter that would be so profoundly disturbing and upsetting for me to read about that it wouldn’t be remotely worth the toll in terms of whatever message the story has, so it’s a book I don’t plan to ever read. I’ve also read other books by Nabokov and haven’t enjoyed his writing style save for the synesthesia, so that’s another reason why it doesn’t appeal to me.

oh, east of eden is by steinbeck! i thought it would be right up your alley since it’s all about whether people are born “evil” or not, and whether or not they would be able to escape the environment they grew up in. personally, i think it deconstructs the idea of there being a thing as “pure evil”. it’s also LITERALLY got your aesthetic…one of the main characters is an edgy goth boy who struggles with demons. i found it to be an extremely powerful book that saved me when i was really down.

Oh gosh, whoops!! I thought you meant the anime! (There’s an anime called that too).

I haven’t read the Steinbeck novel either, but that’s because I’m actually not a huge American literature fan. However, you are definitely selling me on it. That sounds right up my alley.

I just read the plot summary (I always read spoilers before reading or watching a story–not specific ones, but I need to know the ending or I’ll be too tense to enjoy a story as I don’t like suspense) and the summary brought me to tears. So um. This is being prioritized.

What are your thoughts on the new HxH chapter?

Hello anon!

I loved the chapter!

I liked how the trolley problem was presented and it is
interesting that the choice between a country and one’s loved ones resembles
the choice Meruem was asked to make in the CAA.

The CAA treated the theme of evolution and more specifically
tried to explore the difference between the evolution of the species and the evolution
of the individual. All of this while trying to define what a “human” is.

The current arc seems to put the characters in front of a
similar choice, but here the danger doesn’t lie in another species potentially
stronger than humanity which might drive it to extinction. Here the danger lies
in society and policy both of which are human creations.

Fo you think Halkenburg will learn how to use nen ?

Fo’ sho’. XD

Actually, yes, though. I think he is likely to be a Tserriednich foil (we already know they are close yet have different views on everything; Tserriednich wants to kill his siblings; Halkenberg wanted to save them).

Tserriednich is naturally gifted at nen, and it appears Halkenburg will be too.

I wonder if Tserriednich and Halkenburg will team up to kill Benjamin… we will see. I see Halkenburg falling victim to his own flaws, as I mentioned earlier, and dying as a result.

Either way I’m like please let Oito, a woman who isn’t naturally gifted at all and who used to be obsessed with the frivolity Tserriednich proclaims to hate, take Tserriednich down… and the fact that Tserriednich’s nen beast ate Oito’s bug seems to indicate a future direct conflict between them.

I was thinking about Kurta clan massacre today and what events could lead to it, about each spider’s reaction, etc. I thought what if it happened after losing member no.4 or no.8 or someone else and Chrollo desperate and bitter wanted to distract himself with some special treasure (or just make someone suffer), like scarlet eyes. Some of the members didn’t like the idea of such cruel genocide but they knew (or they thought so) that it would make him feel better so they swallowed little sympathy

they had and just rolled with it, since they were his friends. Pakunoda was one of them. In YN, she thinks that killing Chrollo will make Kurapika (who she knows is desprate and bitter) feel better and, since that’s what his friends want, why won’t they run away and allow Kurapika fulfil his desires, just like she and other members did several years ago, besides, Kurapika’s actions towards troupe are justified, troupe’s towards Kurtas weren’t. When Gon says “because we are his friends, we don’t

want him to kill” just for a minute a thought crosses her mind that maybe she and other members should have influenced each other differently or something like that. I really think Pakunoda wouldn’t be happy about massacre. I thought at first she was one of the most ruthless ones after she caused Squalla’s death but then I remembered he was actually a mafia member and troupe doesn’t like (maybe despise) mafia for justified reasons, so I don’t think she’s generally that cruel. I also don’t want

to sound like troupe apologist but I assume they were a newly found groupe back then, with only little blood on their hands (if any and if innocent at all) and, regardless of their past, I think some of them wouldn’t like causing a genocide in such a brutal way.

You don’t sound like an apologist! Seeking to understand is not the same as excusing–like no matter how good their reasons it’s still like not okay–and I’m with you in that I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the sheer brutality of the massacre and what we know of certain members’ personalities, especially Pakunoda. I really want to hear Chrollo’s perspective on it at some point.

Your theory is entirely possible. It’s implied that Hisoka defeated #4 sometime after the massacre, but #8′s being killed by the Zoldycks before the massacre is possible. (Either way, the ties between Chrollo and the Zoldycks have a lot of potential given that Kalluto and now Illumi (though I am suspicious of him, sorry Illu) have joined the PT despite Silva saying to stay away from them, and I really think they should be explored more before Chrollo dies.)

It’s still something I struggle to imagine: Pakunoda torturing children, but apparently it happened. -__-

Empathy was kind of a calling card of her character even if she could be ruthless as well, so it’s hard to fathom. I really like how this theory challenges Paku in remembering something different, which we already know is true because of the Uvogin requiem. It’s implied that Uvo would have wanted them to “go really crazy” and kill a bunch of people, so they did.

Considering their requiem for Uvogin and how violent that was (which Feitan says is crazier than normal, as the Kurta massacre seems to have been), I can easily see #8′s death having fueled the massacre (which to me sounds even more brutal than the mafia attack).

Part of me is also interested to see if revenge had anything to do with it given the theme of the cycle of revenge in Chrollo and Kurapika’s arcs and the weird message of Meteor City left behind, but we’ll see.
