Good question! I quite like Zeke as a character so I would be interested in seeing this explored but I’m not sure. It’s possible, but there are other factors at play as well: namely, if they had died without being eaten by another shifter they would be reborn in some innocent child. Maybe Zeke doesn’t like seeing innocent kids born w only thirteen years to live (I think he genuinely does understand the horror of this because of what his parents did to him, and so is in complete despair and wants to destroy everyone to destroy this), but also it’d be hard to track them down then. I think he just didn’t want Eren to have to fight too many people at once. My personal opinion is that Zeke has cut himself off from feeling for people in general, but he isn’t incapable of it. He just chooses not to.

Why Frieda and zeke??

Kidding. But I do enjoy both their characters even if Frieda was like, a kind person, and Zeke really is not. Both of them were exploited by their parents for political reasons and told they were saving their people, but really it just hurt them. They were both treated as tools, and I’d like to think that if they met they could relate over that. Frieda, unlike Historia and also unlike Zeke, never expresses resentment towards her father and uncle when she probably should have (as we know from her breakdown scene with Historia that she was afraid) but still reaches out and does what she can for the people around her; Zeke channels all his energy into destroying everything (presumably). I’d like to think Zeke could help Frieda learn to fight, and Frieda could help Zeke learn to see that there is beauty in the world that should not be destroyed.
I don’t know how have people who still thinks that Zeke wants to restore the eldian’s empire. In fact, Zeke is clearly a person who don’t want this. My friend pointed out a part of Zeke monologue in chapter 81:”Fools, still haven’t learned a thing from their past, I bet in the end they’ll be sending every person in the walls on a suicide charge, from their elders to their childrens. Saying if their going to die, might as well go down fighting. WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE?!!”. Continue…
Dehumanization is a coping mechanism. He didn’t tell levi " i want to
make sure gabi and falco are safe and secure and close by where i can
have my eyes on them at all times" he said it in a sneaky jokey way by
first acting like the forest is a hotel. I don’t trust his 100% or
think his defintion of eldia is the same as what eren as in mind but i
do think he cares for some, he arguably even put straw to cushion porco
and pieck’s fall too
For moments like those that I think Zeke is not in favor of
untra-nationalist regimes that send the population to war to honor the
nation(which is what these people wanting the back of the Empire of
Eldian are walking toward). I don’t buy the idea that he’s a revivalist
of eldian.
Yeah, that’s my opinion as well, though others are entitled to their disagreement (and my anons, whether one or more, have been very polite about it, and more discussion is never bad!) I don’t think Zeke’s on Marlay’s side either; I think he equally despises Marlay and Eldia.
Nihilism seems to be a driving force of his character, along with possibly an ego that comes from his special blood. But it’s also like… he was a victim as a child and how he was brainwashed and what he did to his parents was not something that he is responsible for since he was just a kid. I also think it’s entirely possible he feels guilt over that and that drives his nihilism, but there’s no evidence for or against that currently, so we’ll see.
That’s a good point about Pieck and Porco! I do think that he cares for Eren, to an extent, but I don’t know that he cares for Eren (or Porco or Pieck) outside of how they can be useful to him and his ultimate aims. If he does, I’ll be happy to see that. If he doesn’t, I won’t be surprised, but it still doesn’t make him a soulless monster because if SnK has one point it’s driving into everyone, it’s that monsters are inside everyone, but everyone also has a soul.
Do you think Zeke really is a revivalist of Eldian and intends to bring Eldian empire back or that he is just acting, to destroy them from within?
I think he’s a lying liar who lies with his pants on fire about being a revivalist of Eldia, and he’s a nihilist who wants to end it all or something of the sort. He’s very good at using people’s rhetoric to manipulate them as we see with Yelena, who is so devoted she treats him like a god, and all the Warriors, and Marlay, and Floche now, and Eren.
I don’t believe Zeke is acting for Marlay exactly, but neither do I think he has Paradis’s interest at heart. He has his own. I’ve yet to see him show compassion for anyone (the opposite; he shows no compassion for Annie, threatens Reiner’s life, brutally tortured and killed Mike for funsies, and sees Gabi and Falco as inconveniences), and that’s majorly suspicious to me.
Could you rank all the titan shifters (as in the humans themselves) in order of how much you like them and why? Including both current ones and predecessors. (I guess except for shifters like the 1st king and Miss Tybur because they aren’t developed characters just parts of the plot)
1) Armin Arlert. He’s my favorite character because of his complexity and relatability, and I love how his flaws are still present, and how he’s basically a covert hero for the entire story. His flaws are that he underestimates himself and has major insecurity and a lack of self-worth, as shown in his heroic sacrifice. He really doesn’t value himself completely because, like Erwin, a foil of him, he values ideas over individuals in some ways–however, he still struggles to reconcile that with a very real and very present compassionate side, as shown in how he understands that empathy and talking to Marlay is the best way forward, not bam bam kill them.
2) Eren Jaeger. He’s such a unique protagonist, and despite his anger issues and the things he’s doing now, he’s compelling, sympathetic even if you can’t excuse his actions, and just really intriguing. I think Eren’s current spiral is completely understandable but also not excusable, obviously, and I love his foiling with Mikasa, Armin, and Hisoria. He’s desperate and scared, and he’s a child who was forced to grow up too fast and now he’s an adult who is repeating the same mistakes adults made with him. It’s tragic to the core.
3) Annie Leonhart. I love Annie and if she doesn’t come back to the plot soon I’mma cry. I love her contrast with Mikasa, Eren, and Armin–all of them really–and how she really, really wanted to be a kind person and wanted to save individuals (like how she saved Armin during the Female Titan Arc) and get back to her father even though he was abusive because at least he loved her. Despite her cold personality, she wanted to be liked and loved, and I really want her to have that chance for however brief a time.
4) Ymir. I love Ymir and her relationship with Historia, and I’m still bitter about her ending lol. But her compassion and the way in which she foils Historia is excellent, and I do not believe her role is over in the story just yet even if she is dead.
5) Reiner Braun. Reiner’s development over the Marlay Arc has been amazing. I always liked him but this really made him grow in my eyes. I desperately want him to have the chance to redeem himself by saving Gabi and Falco–which does not mean letting either of them take over his titan.
6) Bertolt Hoover. I loved Bertolt. I really do still love him, and I think his ending should have been better written in terms of what it meant for his character because I think the ball got dropped a bit there. His “Somebody” speech from the Clash of the Titans Arc is exactly why that arc is my favorite arc, and that speech moves me to tears with how visceral and raw the emotions are every single time I read it. He just wanted somebody to find them and see them and save them. And, no one did for him.
7) Zeke Jaeger. I actually don’t like Zeke but I think he is a fascinating, compelling character and a fantastic villain (yes, I do think he is the final antagonist). He foils Levi in that he and Levi are both mentor figures for Eren. I don’t believe his “I was always on Paradis’s side!” spiel at all, but I do utterly sympathize with the role his father forced on him.
8) Pieck. She’s just cool, man. And I’m terrified for her.
10) Porco. I actually quite like Porco, though he’s kind of a brat. But I think he made the exact same mistake he accused Reiner of making during the most recent battle and messed things up for everyone, and I hope that jumpstarts some development for him.
11) Eren Kruger. Again, I quite like him, but he was only around for a few chapters. I am curious if we will access his memories again as well.
12) Grisha Jaeger. Grisha, you are a bad dad. I know he tried to do better and largely did with Eren, but he still cursed his kid and I just. I have a hard time with that. And poor Zeke.
Oh, I’m counting Marcel with Lady Tybur. They’re cool but just kinda there.

Ok, some chapters ago I wrote this post about Zeke and my thoughts haven’t changed that much since then.
I personally think he is gonna be an antagonist, but I don’t think he is gonna be the evil incarnated.
Do you think Zeke has genuine compassion for Eren? When he met him for the first time in Shiganshina he did seem very concerned for Eren and it looked like the most genuine thing we’ve seen from Zeke.
I think Zeke does care, but Zeke, like Grisha (how ironic) probably prioritizes his own goals over his relationship with his brother. I do think he cares about Eren; I just don’t think he knows how to manifest that because he’s never really experienced healthy compassion (at least that we’ve seen so far).
On another note with the whole Zeke thing. People have noticed that in the flashbacks Zeke didn’t wear his signature glasses up until he inherited the beast titan. So people have theorised that the mystery guy who was close to Zeke could’ve been the previous beast titan. Obviously it could just be Zeke’s eyesight got worse like Grisha’s but it seems strange that the guy wore the exact same glasses. In fact I just realised it reminds me of Eren holding Grisha’s glasses after he ate him
I have my questions as well. I wonder if that guy was a father figure for Zeke.
Do you believe Zeke’s explanation about why he sold out his parents? Idk the fact that he did it to save himself and his grandparents is believable enough but still. Something about a 7 year old kid taking action to betray his parents doesn’t sit right with me? I think there’s gotta be more to it than that. There’s obviously potential Kruger mysteries. And there’s that mystery guy that’s holding Zeke when Grisha and Dina are arrested and he’s wearing the same glasses Zeke begins to wear later on
I don’t believe it at all. Not in the slightest. No seven year old is crafty enough to think of that kind of long-term plan, and Isayama generally does portray kids as behaving like, well, kids. It’s just not realistic.
The Marlay were definitely brainwashing him, and I also wonder whether someone in that group treated him like more of a child than his parents did. That could certainly make him want to turn his parents in.
