I liked it too. Utaren is subtextually canon so I will cling to it and run around screaming LOOK AT IT LOOK AT IT LOOK AT THE BEAUTY OF THIS YIN/YANG SHIP OF DREAMS.
Ahem. Okay. Back to other things. I’m happy Pleasure-Chan was mentioned, I love how Takizawa is very much a brother to Hakatori (in how he’s clearly teaching her) because that reminds me of his relationship with Seina. I want him to realize that he can be a good big brother for both Seina and Hakatori, that there doesn’t have to be this human/ghoul divide, that he can accept himself as both.
I was also happy Amon said he loved Donato. See, this is exactly what I had in mind for Amon’s realizing he loved Donato. Donato is his abuser, but he loved him, and healing from an abuser does not mean disavowing that you ever loved them if you did, in fact, love them. It’s not your fault or wrong for loving them; it’s their fault for not taking care of your love. I wanted Amon to realize the complexity of the situation and that he too was a part of the problem, which could only be realized through him reflecting on his relationship with Donato.

The Christian symbolism of Amon’s story is very present here too, because the cross is symbolic of the Christian message: accepting that humanity is all sinners, that we all have messed up and fallen short of God’s standards, and choosing to live anyways. That’s why I liked that Amon stopped Donato with a cross, and with an admission that he loved him. Because again with the Christian symbolism, God is love (that’s a Bible verse), and also there’s another verse where Jesus says that it would be better for people who hurt children to have a millstone being tied around their neck and thrown into the bottom of the sea. Donato is someone who immediately comes to mind with that verse, and I liked that Amon is kind of being Jesus in this scenario and saying No, Stop, and stopping him with the cross.
My one complaint is that while we are getting the right
development, I’m -__- because the development is being told to us rather
than shown though, & that’s just not how character development
works in best writing. I feel like Ishida is cramming for 204-06 chapters but w/e. At least we’re getting that development. But anyways. Back to what I loved.
I think this dampens the idea of Uta being the Nagaraj too, because I just can’t see what that would offer Uta’s character at this point, after this chapter. And as you all know Uta is 3rd on my list of preferences anyways, and him not being the Nagaraj probably helps his chances of survival so I’m happy. Itori is my first preference but that panel in 150 (or 151??) makes Itori unlikely, and my second choice is the only character left I can see it still making sense for them being the Nagaraj in terms of their character arcs: Donato.

Oh look, is that… one eye I see?
