Said this on twitter and I’m sharing it here too as a heads-up:
if you’re planning on sending a message to Ishida after the last chapter drops wait until Thursday, June 5. Remember that the official release is on Thursday, not Monday (when the leak’s out)
I know many, if not all of us, will be emotional and want to tell Ishida how much this means to us and say our ‘thank yous’ but we gotta remember to respect the official release and contain our messages until then.
Please share it so it gets to as many people as possible during the week, let’s make sure Ishida receives a good closure.
TBH, but I think that Kaneki is the protagonist, Urie, Mutsuki ,Touka and Furuta deuteragonist and Juuzou with Tsukiyama tritagonist. Am I right?
Hm, I don’t really know! It’s not a science, though, but I’d say not quite so easy in :re. Like in TG I’d say it’s:
- Kaneki: protagonist
- Touka: deuteragonist
- Amon: tritagonist
But you could make an argument for switching Amon and Touka.
In :re I honestly would say Kaneki is the protagonist and Mutsuki & Urie both deuteragonists–I don’t think one is more important than the other. Furuta is the primary antagonist but isn’t in the first two arcs.
Juuzou, Tsukiyama, and Touka are highly important characters in :re but they are all absent from too many arcs and don’t develop enough consistently throughout :re. That’s not a criticism of their characters; it’s just observing what’s there. Touka’s not a huge part until Cochlea and even then she doesn’t get a lot of individual focus, Tsukiyama’s importance really vanishes after Rose, and Suzuya pops in and out in terms of importance.
Do you believe Furuta liked Kijima? Kijima’s famous quote (“I don’t value my life. If I were as pretty as you, then maybe I would a little. But I don’t care how an ugly body like mine gets used”) got me thinking about how it mirrors Furuta, specifically how Furuta may not have felt disregard for life had he been loved like Kaneki. :o Both he and Kijima are lead to act the way they do and see the world as they do because of their fates. (this is probably a shallow understanding, sorry ;-;)
(same anon!) Additionally, Furuta and Kijima had something stolen from them: Furuta’s hope to live a normal life, and (this is a stretch) Kijima’s normal life in losing his squad/his appearance. They both then work to tear down those who had wronged them. Kijima dedicates his life to work as an investigator, even taking extreme measures to harming them. Furuta and V crush the Washuu household who bestowed upon them their cruel existence. (again, sorry if this is super shallow understanding ;;)
No worries! You don’t need to apologize at all! It’s also not shallow. It is absolutely likely the case that Kijima’s brutality rubbed off on Furuta. Like, compare him to the other Garden Kids like Hairu, who was partnered with Ui, a decent human being. Kijima would probably not have cared for anyone nor anything, not even himself, which er… does absolutely reflect with Furuta became.
Do I think Furuta liked Kijima? No. I don’t think so at all. I think Furuta hated most people, including himself. Kijima seemed to be similar, and they likely worked together decently but that didn’t mean they had any actual affection for each other. 😦
TG can’t end until I see Touka eat cake
This has been a PSA.
Huge runner-up list? Now I’m curious. Also: The Donut Porpoise prays for your soul, although you probably wish he didn’t. (No, I did not invent that silly nickname. I wish I had though.)
Hahahaha!
So, I’d add Noro to the Good Dads & say Hina’s dad might be on there. I also think Kaneki will be a good dad to Pleasure-chan and he’ll be the only Good Dad to live.
EDIT: I FORGOT KUROIWA he is a GOOD DAD. IM SORRY PAPA TOAD.
I’d say Yoshitoki, Houji, Mirumo, Arima, Arata, Kaneki to the Qs, & Urie’s dad fall in the middle and you could arrange them along shades of gray. They did the best they could (they at least tried, all of them) but their trying wasn’t exactly what their kids needed. Like Mirumo is a good dad to Shuu but did the same thing to Karren that Kaneki’s aunt did to him (and I’m sure she was a good mom to her kid) so… he’s a bad dad to his niece. Lol. Hirako’s on my Bad Dad list currently but I think he will grow to be a good dad to Yusa.
Mado Kureo is kind of the opposite of Kuzen, if you think about it. Kuzen is a good person in many ways, but a bad dad to Eto, Touka, & Ayato. Mado is a bad person in most ways, but a good dad who prioritized Akira over promotions, etc. The novel Void does a really great job of illustrating just how supportive he was of Akira.
hi!! do you think this will officially be the end of TG, or do you think Ishida has something else planned?
Hello hello!
I think this is the end of the story. I really, truly do. The story itself is indicating we came full circle. The chiastic structure is real.

As for me, I personally feel like this on TG… everyone knows I don’t like and felt hurt/even betrayed by the framing of the message thanks to the panel directly above, and I feel like its themes fell apart in the ending. I still feel this way. But that does not mean I don’t think the journey was worth it. TG really did save my life, and it introduced me to many wonderful friends (for real, some wonderful people even sent me a package after my father died, and everyone’s support over the past year–which has been one of the hardest of my life–means a hell of a lot. Internet can be good, and I am so grateful to Sensei for this story that brought a lot of beauty into my life). The story has been a really productive coping mechanism.
Anyways, Kaneki sums up how I feel about TG in 176, melodramatic though it may seem (but since it literally saved my life at one point I don’t care how melodramatic it sounds):

I’ve followed your blog for some time, and I really value your take on things TG related. You’re probably one of very few that can fairly review and discuss TG. I wanted to ask if you prefer TG RE: over the original 14? I’m currently on book 4 of RE (I won’t read it online lol, though I know the general gist of things to come) and I’m really, really struggling to like it 😫 I just can’t get into it -were you the same? Would you recommend sticking it out?
Ahh, thank you! I try lol.
So yes, I actually prefer :re to TG, though I would say the original TG is as a whole better written (well, the first 5-6 volumes of :re I also think are even better written, but afterwards I do think pacing becomes a big issue because :re is a far more ambitious manga and to quote a friend, the more ambitious stories are the more their flaws can be bothersome). But the themes :re introduces are later explored and fully fleshed out, and I do feel like the first TG is incomplete without :re. The first TG is really the tragedy, but Ishida wasn’t so much trying to convey a tragedy.
That being said, if you’re struggling to get into it by book 4–that’s a long time for you! It depends on what’s the struggle, though: the original TG characters do eventually come back and get more focus (like Touka, Yomo, etc.) and there are some really great moments between them and the new :re characters, and the basic plot elements of the first TG are really further developed later in :re. If you can’t get into it, you shouldn’t necessarily force yourself, but I’d maybe stick it out a few more volumes, since the original characters start making more of a comeback around volume 6. But you’re not obligated to–if you prefer to just read the first TG, it’s a great story on its own too!
Hi! I accidentally pressed the Ask button when I wasn’t finished typing (just a “Hi!”; not even sure if it’s in anon *facepalm*). I wanted to say thank you for the content and being active in TG. In an unexplainable way, though I’ve been a silent reader up til now, the fandom has(is) helped(ing) me get through some really dark times. I’m bummed about TG possibly ending. With the ending near, is it too late to join groups like @ayahinanetwork? It’s fine if it is, you’ve still all been great 😃
It was indeed anon hahaha! But no worries, it happens. And ah, thank you! I have no plans to slow down my TG activity despite it ending. Naturally there will be less new content (if any) but I still love this story and it’s one of my favorites ever, and an ending even if it is rushed can give new light to illuminate earlier parts of the story (like, we are getting the right development, which is great to see). I mean, people are still writing on stories they love hundreds and sometimes thousands of years after they’ve been told. So while the fandom might slow down after a bit, I don’t think it will ever really disappear, and I have no intention to stop posting TG content ever. XD
I’m not a part of ayahina network because my blog and twitter are kind of all I can handle, but someone who is ( @lilacflamesss? Idk if you are but it seems up your alley XD) please let Anon know!
…did Ishida really just draw both a dying Fruit and a dying Hairu.
