This is a more personal question from me, but is Reiner canonically gay? When I saw Ymir say that and Reiner accepting it was uplifting for me to see an openly gay character, but he also likes Historia, and then there’s that thing about him having split personalities. I was just wondering if they ever address that later in the manga. Bertolt was into Annie too so their thing was more brotherly.

It’s super unclear, lol. He could be bisexual. But he’s definitely not straight.

Basically, from what my friend in Japan says, what Reiner says to Ymir is really unambiguous about him being gay, and Isayama has drawn art of him as well that very much suggests he views the character as gay (it’s explicit). Reiner’s birthday is also commonly known as “yaoi day” among fandoms in Japan, so, well, yeah. I doubt the character is intended to be straight.

It’s also interesting that this is Reiner clearly in Marlayan Reiner mode, when he tells Ymir he does not like women. When he claims to be interested in Christa, he seems to more or less be in his persona of ideal soldier then, and so it is possible he projects his ideal self as being straight, which is sad but not entirely unexpected given the toxic masculinity that often comes with the heroism ideals of Reiner’s ideal self. His ideal self is attracted to a mirage, because of course, Christa does not exist, and he still sees her as Christa as shown in how when he gives Ymir’s letter to the SC, he says it’s for Christa, not Historia.

Does/did he actually like Historia? I think so, because can you say that the role he was playing really wasn’t in any way him? I’m not sure it’s so clear-cut. In his persona, Reiner might be trying to simplify things into black and white, yes or no, when nothing in the world is and that includes his sexuality. He might be bi with a preference for men, but I do think he’s absolutely not straight according to canon.

As for him and Bertolt, well, we don’t really know about Reiner’s feelings for him–which, tbh, I do think are very ambiguous, and given his statements about his sexuality, it’s not wrong to interpret it as romantic affection on Reiner’s part, but of course it’s not canonical either. And his feelings may not have been reciprocated, though Bertolt clearly did care a ton about him, but that doesn’t mean Reiner’s feelings for Bertolt were totally straight. We just don’t know. But we do know/can say that Reiner isn’t straight.

What are your favorite Attack on Titan ships, and what kind of ships, if any, do you hope come true?

Eremika, Yumikuri, and Aruani are my favorites!!! Of these, Yumikuri is canon, and I have written quite a bit about what I expect for Eremika–an acknowledgement is likely, a happy ending is definitely not happening. Aruani is probably my actual very favorite, followed by Yumikuri, then Eremika. But Aruani is not very likely to have any canon acknowledgement beyond some teasing as has happened in recent chapters–but ya never know 😉

Reibert, Marlowe/Hitch, and Galco are also ships I really love, and if Falco survives, and I still am hopeful he will, I think Galco’s chances of canonicity and a happy ending are really good.

For non-canon ships I also enjoy seeing art, etc, from Jeanmarco, Springles, Pieck/Porco, Petruo, LeviHan, Mikenana, etc. But I’m not very invested in any of these.

Do you have snk keychains? :0 Which ones?

Behold Reibert.

Those are the only keychains I have. I also have Armin & Annie Funko pops and plushies. Someday I will collect all the SnK funko pops but the Eremika ones are like so expensive. But I also want Levi and Sasha and if they don’t make a Historia one for season 3, I riot. You can see plush Annie’s eye in the background, lol.

So out of curiousity why is Berthold and Annie a NOTP of yours? Obvs it’s fine if you don’t want to tell! I was just wondering if there was any particular reason!

Under da cut!

Because Aruani and Reibert are OTPs and I’m petty. Hahaha not really, though I’m sure that’s part of it (though I have 0 canon expectations for either of those ships), but honestly I don’t like Bertolt and Annie’s dynamic and can’t see any way it would have worked in canon. It was very very obviously one sided and that made me sad for Bertolt. I tend to like ships where characters can encourage each other towards positive growth, and Beruani only had the potential to encourage them to destruction imo.

Annie pretty clearly didn’t care for the other Warriors and Bertolt because of his confidence issues needed someone who cared about him and encouraged him to do more, who gave him a sense of self-worth because they believed in him, and Annie wasn’t capable of that. Reiner did believe in him.

For Annie’s part, she pretty clearly respected three people in this manga: Eren, Marlowe, and Armin. Why? She literally tells us its because they stick up for what they believe, though she calls the first two idiots for it. But she respects that, and presumably wishes she could be that kind of person herself. Bertolt is the exact opposite of that kind of person–I love him, but he didn’t have a spine; he had a heart, just like Annie. Annie needs someone who wants to be both.

I like Aruani because Armin has both a spine and a heart, but that’s honestly just my opinion and I don’t have canon expectations for any ship except Eremika.
