Your least favorite character is Ed and al’s dad in Fullmetal alchemist? Why is it because he abandon his kids?

i mean… least fave character who matters, I suppose. I think he’s an excellent character; I just am generally… unhappy with parents who ditch their kids lol. It’s not that he isn’t a great character because he is; it’s just that I have personal grumpiness towards that particular trope. I do think he did better in the end, so that’s good.

I was literally about to ask whether you’ve watched FMA when then you shared that Royai fic! I wanna know who are your top 5 favourite characters and why?

1) Ling

Look guys if I list my favorites you’ll notice a common trait. A lot of them are angsty long-haired boys and Ling fits right in. No, but seriously, I love his arc and his development with Greed and how he pays for his foolishness and grows because of it.

2) Roy

A sad man with fire magic desperately seeking atonement? And he loves Riza, you can’t convince me otherwise.

3) Riza

She’s the yin to Roy’s yang. They compliment each other so well.

4) Lan Fan

I love her role in Ling’s arc and how she’ll basically do anything for him, but in the end her values her as well. It’s beautiful. She reminds me of Mikasa Ackerman form SnK in some ways.

5) Mei Chang

She also has a fantastic arc, and a panda.

Shout out to Ed, Envy, Pride/Selim, and Greed as well!

You haven’t really talked about Pride/Selim a lot so far, so what are your thoughts on him?

I love him and spent the entire time screaming someone save him

He’s kind of awful. But he’s also very childlike in his awfulness, judging others without considering that he has a plank in his eye because he’s different, you see, somehow better. Pride is basically what happens if you give a child a shitty Father and a batshit amount of power.

That being said, his relationship with Mrs Bradley was touching, and that’s why I thought he had a very fitting ending.

How accurate/diverse do you think the representation in fma is (in terms of its female cast, its characters with other ethnicities, and its queer characters, both implied and canon)?

I think it does an excellent job when it comes to its female characters. Riza Hawkeye has a great arc, as do Olivier Armstrong and Izumi Curtis–who is motivated by her lost child in part, but her motherhood is a strength and not a weakness which is like… do we ever see that? Also Salim’s mom. Minor character, but again, her motherly instincts are treated as a plus and not a weakness. Mei Chang and Lan Fan also are well done with their own goals and own arcs. Winry is pretty cool too, and she has an arc of her own. I love Winry. The perks of having a femake mangaka, yo.

About the others… well. Alas, I don’t think it’s very diverse insofar as LGBT representation goes. I can’t think of LGBT characters in it besides Garfiel which is… he’s pretty much a stereotype. Envy maybe? I had to google Garfiel’s name. When it comes to different races, I think it’s a larger issue in anime in that they to have no problem creating great characters who are Asian (and if it’s set in Japan that’s good) and white (like in FMA, and also SnK), but not black people or brown.

Fullmetal Alchemist

  • Character I first fell in love with: Alphonse.
  • Character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Greed
  • Character everyone loves but I don’t: I don’t hate anyone…
  • Character I love but everyone else hates: Pride/Salim. Oh god it is a pattern.
  • Character I used to love but don’t any longer: no one.
  • Character I would kiss: Ling
  • Character I want to slap (some sense into): Ling
  • A pairing I love: ROYAI.
  • A pairing I hate: I don’t think I hate any pairings! Do people ship Ed and Al? I’d hate that.

I like how you mentioned them mirroring hope and overcoming guilt, that was an amazing way to put it. Also wondering, which Homonculus did you enjoy the most characterization wise and in general? Character wise, I absolutely adore Greed (mostly due to Lin) but his final realization that friendship filled up the emptiness in his heart before fading away was powerful. All the Homonculus deaths were rather ironic or contrary to the sins they represented though, I loved that so much.

That’s a great observation about their deaths/demises being ironic!! And yes, I LOVED Greed; he’s my favorite Homonculi because of the redemptive elements to his arc, and his battle with Ling. But I also really, really enjoyed Envy as a character, and Pride/Salim.

Good evening, how ya doin? I’m still hype after reading FMA so I was curious since you mentioned Riza and Roy’s relationship being one of your favorite dynamics, what made you love it so much? I like how her father entrusted her to him, and how she was basically his eyes and ears, they had a nice dynamic.

Yasssssssss. I love them for the same reasons you mention, and that they had an infinite trust in each other. I know that you mention her father entrusting her to Roy, but Roy appreciated Riza for Riza I believe, and never underestimated her. Really they represented hope for each other, and belonging, because both of them had done so much and struggled with their own sense of guilt, but in seeing the other person they saw someone who they thought deserved to climb above their misdeeds, and they mirrored that hope back to each other. I found that beautiful.
