He is my fave! It’s been a long time since I watched or read the series, though, so I don’t think I’ll make a full meta on him (sorry!), but in the manga I liked him even more than the anime because he seemed more emotional. But either way, like Light, he was kind of removed from society and didn’t know how to interact with it–Light was good at pretending to be a member of society while also viewing himself as above it, whereas Near really couldn’t even pretend to fit in (like L) exactly because he was just very socially awkward, but Near was okay with that. In that aspect he was a good foil for Light and for L. But I enjoyed him for the same reasons I enjoyed L, and I liked that he finally outsmarted Light (even though I also liked Light as a character), and the money raining scene was a favorite. He uses some pretty existentialist philosophy, which is probably why I like him so much being an existentialist about many things myself. I also found several aspects of his character highly tragic, namely how he was raised in an orphanage for one purpose.

Death Note.

✖ Least Favorite Character: Mello
✔ who’s most like me: Matsuda!

❤ three more characters that I like: Light (yes I like him a lot, he’s awful but a great character), L, Matsuda
Wait why is L a murder son? Could you define a murder son for me cos I don’t remember L ever killing anybody!
He’s not really lol, I’m mostly being facetious. XD But what I found so interesting about L as a character is that his morality wasn’t that different from Light’s actually. They were very much… like Light was his shadow, a role usually given to an antagonist of a protagonist, having similar beliefs about right and wrong and the role it plays in governing society, but Light took it to another level. Light was the protagonist and also the villain. It was a very interesting spin on story structures–in a typical story structure, L might have been the protagonist, or Light might have been right, but neither was the case.
This is always a common / interesting ask for any anime watcher. But were you team Light or team L?
Team Light and L BroTP! XD Those episodes where they were actually working together were fantastic.
OH OH OH SORT RC TYPES WITH DEATH NOTE CHARACTERS EG “Ginny Weasley – Bikaku)

Have you ever watched Death Note? If so, what are your top 3 favorite moments?
I have! Soooo.
1) Light’s death I like tragedy okay
2) Near making it rain money
3) Light L and Misa dancing around together
Bonus: Light suffering in prison.
What did you love about Death Note? I personally liked Yagami’s progression as a character, at first he was simply trying to “fix society” by erasing the criminals as a rather neutral character but then he went overboard and became chaotic by abusing his power. The ending was pretty fitting too imo.
I like the whole Shakespearean tragedy vibe of it! Light isn’t special though he believes he is, and he genuinely believes he’s doing the right thing but like, from the very first chapter it’s obvious to the reader how it’s going to end.
Have you watched the live action Death Note movie? What where your thoughts if you did watch it.
I haven’t! But I heard Light dies in his father’s arms which is all I ever wanted.
I love Near too he’s so underrated!!
Near is my baby.
