Hi! I just want to ask what do you think about Shigaraki’s words to Overhaul in chapter 160. Do you think Overhaul deserved that treatment or not (I mean he needs to suffer) Also Shigaraki was pretty savage too lol. What do you think about him too? (chapter 160 is one of my favorite, the chase was pretty cool too. It was one of the ‘classical’ thing that villains do in movies. You know be cool and walking in front of an explosion. Also because sensei doesn’t give this type of moments to the them

Ahhh so, I think @linkspooky wrote a fantastic meta on that scene here. I agree with Link’s perspective, and also would say that that scene in 160 is one of my favorites in the entire manga as well. I can’t wait to see it animated, lol.

As for deserve… it was narratively karmic, but also terrifying and not good for Shigaraki’s development (well, narratively, good, in terms of boy get help, not good, if you get what I mean!)

Bakugo won and shown character development: cool At the expense of tokage : not cool I want to be happy but tokage hyped up only for it to not matter unless horikoshi pulls a surprise kinda disappointed maybe it’s cause I’m not that much of a Bakugo fan

Yeah, I can see that! I was happy with Bakugou’s development (finally development in this arc, finally, I’ve been waiting 84 years lmao). But Tokage was built up for no reason as well which is definitely frustrating. Sigh. And, to be honest, I’m still hoping for Bakugou to get even more development (and apologize to Deku).

Do you think Endeavor’s redemption gets more spotlight than how his victims deal with the abuse?

In the recent arcs, on and off, yes. The majority of the Pro-Hero Arc, the Remedial Hero License Exam, etc–Endeavor is kind of the main character and hero of this, and we see his pain and suffering that led to him lashing out, which is fine if you’re going to redeem a character (it’s actually necessary if that’s the goal).

But when we get the other family members, we focus on how Rei feels about Endeavor, not about how Rei feels about herself. Her thoughts are filtered through a lens of Endeavor-focus, which is kind of squicky because the point of abuse is that people make it all about themselves and punish other people for their pain. Fuyumi and Rei are framed as being in the right with Natsuo in the wrong through the fight with Endeavor, because we’re encouraged to root for Endeavor in the fight against the Noumu. Because we’re rooting for him in another part of the chapter, it makes little sense to imply that the author intends for us to root for Natsuo’s dislike of him in the other pages of the chapter.

Until 192, wherein the framing is really, really good, showing the complicated reality of coping with abuse and how everyone copes in different ways, and that’s not necessarily wrong. (The only one I’d say is coping in a maladaptive way is actually Touya/Dabi.) And then it swings back to showing Todoroki’s pain and anguish in the current arc, which is good except when you’ve just been building up a character for redemption in the same chapter it feels a bit whiplashy.

So I do think Horikoshi is trying, but it’s a difficult topic to write about and it’s not perfect, and sometimes he’s succeeding and sometimes he’s struggling or even just–not succeeding at being sensitive. I can critique that aspect of the story while still admitting the Todoroki family drama is my favorite part of the story, I was super excited for each chapter of the Pro-hero Arc, and at this point I’m very interested to see how Endeavor’s redemption plays out, since it certainly ties into one of my favorite characters’ arcs (Dabi’s).

Hey hamlet how are ya i think I have a cool idea for the traitor arc ( and when I say cool I mean dumb probably) how about ururaka goes undercover as a false traitor and figure out who the real one is , only aizawa and the principal will know including hatsume for gear and upgrades she could also have partners like tsyu and maybe jiro what do ya think? Its dumb isn’t it it’s ok you can tell me

I would LOVE to see this! It is not stupid. Idk if it will happen, but DAMN someone write it. It’d be a cool parallel to Hawks, especially given her similar family situation (poverty), and I would just love to see her complexity explored more.

BNHA thoughts, Himiko and Ochako foiling. If Ochako gets aggressive in her upcoming fight, and Horikoshi actually goes anywhere with her jealous streak, it would make her less “heroic” and give her more complexity (which I think she needs). Meanwhile, Himiko has surprising depth, considering that she was introduced as kind of a stereotypical Yandere. We’ve seen her show bravery, empathy, she’s smarter than her bubbly persona suggests. These two could do with growing toward each other somewhat.

Yeah. If Ochaco’s development has to do with Deku, I’d be okay with it in terms of it actually affecting the plot besides its own romantic subplot, which is all it’s done so far.

When you responded to the Bakugou anon you said that it stands in contrast to Deku’s development. What did you mean with that?

Mostly that, well, Deku doesn’t have much development besides physical mastery of his quirk. He’s always saved people, always won, always done the right thing. He’s plenty likable and his ordinariness works well for the story, but he isn’t an exceptionally well done character in my opinion. That doesn’t make him a bad character or unlikeable in any way, though, so I’m not hating on him but merely saying in comparison with Bakugou and Todoroki–well, there’s a reason those two are wildly popular and had twice the amount of votes Deku had in the popularity poll.
